Due to the extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19 and the resulting uncertainties for the cities of El Paso and Juárez as well as our communities and museums, the 6th Border Biennial has been cancelled. The El Paso Museum of Art and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literature through the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez look forward to continuing the important work of this project in the future.

The 6th Border Biennial continues a more than decade-long binational collaboration between the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez (MACJ) on an exhibition simultaneously occurring on either side of the El Paso / Juárez border. This edition of the Border Biennial addresses challenges posed by the 2,000-mile-long border bisecting the frontera region through artworks in a variety of media—some site-specific—by approximately two-dozen artists. The artworks featured are concerned with the historical, contemporary, and future effects of the boundary and recent “hardening” policies on: people, animals, environment, landscape, and goods; economies, infrastructure, migration, and theory; prejudice, violence, identity, and nationality. The 6th Border Biennial is curated by Kate Green, Ph.D., Senior Curator, EPMA, with MACJ staff and curatorial advisors Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Art Historian and Curator, and Rolando Flores, Artist and Tercerunquinto Collective member. The curatorial team is selecting artists for the 6th Border Biennial through an open call for submissions—by any person or collective living and working in any discipline within a 200-mile radius of the United States / Mexico border—and also, for the first time, is inviting several artists to participate who live beyond the border, but who engage with it in their work.

The 6th Border Biennial features artworks by well-established and emerging artists, and by those from the area and beyond. It is accompanied by public programs and an illustrated publication with critical essays, as well as proposals by participating artists for potential, unrealized border projects. The exhibition encourages crossing, between media, moments, museums, communities, languages, and countries. In structure and content, the 6th Border Biennial and its programs reflect on the necessities, difficulties, and joys of crossing physical, psychological, and cultural barriers, while reshaping narratives about and imagining what might be to come for the border region.

Tanto El Paso Museum of Art y El Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura a través del Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez esperamos continuar con este importante proyecto en un futuro.

La 6ta Bienal Fronteriza extiende la colaboración binacional de más de una década entre El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) y el Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez (MACJ) en una exposición que se realiza simultáneamente en ambos lados de la frontera de El Paso y Juárez. Esta edición de la 6ta Bienal Fronteriza aborda los desafíos que plantea la frontera de 2,000 millas de largo que divide la región fronteriza a través de obras de arte en una variedad de medios, algunos específicos del lugar, creadas por dos docenas de artistas aproximadamente. Las obras de arte en exhibición hacen referencia a los efectos históricos, contemporáneos y futuros de la frontera y el reciente “fortalecimiento” de las políticas respecto a: las personas, los animales, el medio ambiente, el paisaje y los bienes; economías, infraestructura, migración y teoría; los prejuicios, la violencia, la identidad y la nacionalidad. La 6ta Bienal Fronteriza está bajo la curaduría de la Dra. Kate Green, curadora sénior del EPMA, con el personal del MACJ y con los asesores curatoriales Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, historiadora de arte y curadora, y Rolando Flores, artista e integrante del colectivo Tercerunquinto. El equipo curatorial está seleccionando artistas para la 6ta Bienal Fronteriza a través de una convocatoria abierta para propuestas, por cualquier persona o colectivo que viva—y que trabaje en cualquier disciplina—dentro de un radio de 200 millas de la frontera de Estados Unidos / México, y también, por primera vez, está invitando a participar a varios artistas que viven más allá de la frontera, pero que la involucran en sus obras.

La 6ta Bienal Fronteriza presenta obras de arte de artistas bien establecidos y emergentes, y de aquellos del área y más lejos. Se acompaña de programas públicos y una publicación ilustrada con ensayos críticos, así como propuestas de artistas participantes para proyectos fronterizos potenciales no realizados. La exposición fomenta la mezcla de medios, momentos, museos, comunidades, idiomas y países. En estructura y contenido, la 6ta Bienal Fronteriza y sus programas, reflexionan sobre las necesidades, dificultades y alegrías de cruzar las barreras físicas, psicológicas y culturales, al tiempo que reformulan las narrativas sobre la región fronteriza e imaginan lo que puede estar por venir.
