Join the El Paso Museum of Art for a special presentation by the Tom Lea Institute exploring the life and work of El Paso artist Tom Lea and his connection to Mexican bullfighting during its golden age in the 1940s.

Matthew Butler, Professor of the History of Mexico at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss Lea’s experiences in Mexico, including his travels to bull-breeding ranches and his fascination with the country’s toros bravos (fighting bulls). These experiences later inspired Lea’s acclaimed 1949 novel, The Brave Bulls.

The presentation will also explore how Lea’s travels and perspectives on Mexican culture influenced his artistic and literary work, as well as his understanding of Texas identity and its relationship to Mexico.

Discover a fascinating chapter in Tom Lea’s life and the cultural connections that shaped his work.
