Dia De Los Muertos

WELCOME TO EL PASO’S DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE CITY OF EL PASO MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT

Saturday, November 2nd, 2024

11 AM to 9 PM

Día de los Muertos is a day of remembrance that is observed throughout México. Overarching ritual practices trace back to the various indigenous cultures of México where these traditions varied but were and continue to be firmly associated with death and rooted in strong beliefs about the afterlife.

Contemporary celebrations reflect a merging of Pre-Columbian, Spanish and African cultural, beliefs, and practices. Common elements of this celebration include ofrendas or altars that are decorated with cempasúchil, papel picado, sugar skulls, pan de muerto, and embellished with favorite gustos (tastes and treats) of the dead.

Enjoy family-oriented art activities, food, live music, and more!

2024 THEME: RAÍCES ANCESTRALES

The theme for El Paso’s 2024 Día de los Muertos celebrations is Raíces Ancestrales/Ancestral Roots: a celebration of the diversity of our region’s cultural heritage that transcends past and present, as well as geography.

The City of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) presents Indigenous influences (both pre- and post-Columbian contact) of Día de Los Muertos in our programming. MCAD programs, including those at the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso Museum of History, El Paso Museum of Archaeology, and the Mexican American Cultural Center encourage the community to reflect on their own ancestral roots by honoring the lives, food, spirits, and traditions of their loved ones who have passed on.
