EPMA invites our border community to join in celebrating the public illumination of Star Ceiling (El Paso), a breathtaking new installation by internationally acclaimed artist Leo Villareal.
The FREE event includes music, and free holiday beverages and pan dulce from local bakeries, all provided thanks to the support of El Paso Electric.
Museum educators will also be offering a FREE lightbox-making activity inspired by Star Ceiling. EPMA curators will be on hand to offer tours of the installation and insights into Villareal’s creative process.
The privately funded artwork, a project of the EPMA Foundation and the Paso del Norte Community Foundation, comes to completion in January 2025 after its groundbreaking in January 2024.
Star Ceiling consists of a suspended LED array, zero-gravity benches, and planters featuring species indigenous to the Chihuahuan Desert. The 120-foot LED array comprises 13,500 energy-efficient LEDs activated by the artist in non-repeating patterns. This unique interactive display will never repeat the same light patterns, creating a different experience for every visitor.
EPMA is grateful to receive this remarkable work of art created by Leo Villareal, an artist with deep roots in our border community whose illuminated art can been found across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. We are thankful to all the individuals who privately raised the funds for Star Ceiling to shine at our doorstep and illuminate El Paso’s Downtown Arts District.
This free event is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and experience the magic of Star Ceiling. EPMA looks forward to sharing this extraordinary evening with visitors of all ages!

Star Ceiling (El Paso) is a privately funded project of the El Paso Museum of Art Foundation in partnership with the Paso del Norte Community Foundation.
